She has that resolute image of her in sunglasses staring at her mobile phone with a look of utter, “I can’t fucking deal with this shit, I have important shit to deal with.” I hear a rumor that someone thinks I’m fat on the Internet and I think, “WAIT EVERYTHING MUST STOP SO I CAN COMMENT ON THIS.”
How does she do it? That’s one of the phrases women are always asked, isn’t it? From moms to politicians, they’re all asked, “My gosh, how do you do it?” And in a way it sounds condescending. But I don’t mean it to be. It is a genuine question on my part. With so much to do and so many places to be, how does she actually do it? I want to believe that there is some secret formula for success and productivity that she has and I don’t. I have a feeling that the answer isn’t anything new. It’s the kind of courtship that only comes once every four years. And eventually, after all is said and done, on one fateful evening in November, that courtship turns into a four-year relationship.
The presidential election and the preceding campaign is a complex web of he-said, she-said, he did what?, Oh no he didn’ts, I wish he dids–it’s a lot like modern dating, in a way. With each candidate trying to be every guy at any given time for any given voter. Some call it “appealing to the constituency,” when in reality it’s just courtship, or whatever is we’re calling “wooing” these days. When the candidates make their stump speeches in swing states they’re really just “hey girl”-ing the crap out of undecided voters.
There’s a brouhaha in Kansas City over a bronze statue of a mostly naked, headless woman who is taking a photo of herself. The statue was a gift from Chinese artist Yu Chang and is located in a local public park. Now, I’m not sure I’d want to walk my kid past this sculpture unawares – so I am sympathetic to the 4,700 people who signed a petition demanding the statue be taken down. So, there’s the world. And then there’s the Catholic Church.
Now, let me start out this piece by saying I respect religion. I respect the structure it gives people and the peace that comes from incorporating spirituality into a personal worldview.
That said, what I don’t understand is how taking strident viewpoints on lifestyle choice does anything but create contention and guilt in a world that is so obviously diverse. Especially because the strong majority of Catholics do things like use birth control.
Two weeks ago, Rome issued a report stating that the umbrella group that represents the most American nuns had departed from church doctrine in favor of “radical feminist views.” What might those be exactly? <<Bites tongue.>>
In 1960, The Second Vatican Council, known colloquially as Vatican II, asked the church to modernize, meaning focusing more on the needs of society, poverty, education, etc. – rather than spreading the Catholic church’s conservative opinions on birth control and abortion. Unfortunately, the resolutions agreed upon during Vatican II have fallen out of favor in Rome during the last 50 years. And as a result, the Catholic Church is taking some harsh steps to keep American nuns in line with their views.

It’s headlines like this that boggle. I have to wonder what the hard-lining messages we hear both as women and men do to muddle our own struggles to find what’s right for us. I would like to think that the very best, and most helpful, dogma is one of flexibility, forgiveness and acceptance.
Maybe that’s a reason why the number of U.S. nuns has already shrunk by two-thirds in the years since 1960. Just saying.

The media’s abuzz celebrating the 50th anniversary of the invention of the Birth Control Pill (which amazingly enough fell on Mother’s Day this year).

In the 1950s, American women, on average, had 3.8 children. Today that number has dropped to 2.1.” Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards is quoted saying: “The invention of the birth control pill revolutionized life for women in America. It’s completely changed women’s options.”
The Pill’s essential contribution – and controversy – is the assertion that women should be able to explore their unfettered sexuality, should be able to decide when and if to have children, should NOT be hindered in work, love or life by the sometimes inconvenient fact of having ovaries. I’ll raise a glass of champagne and down a Tri-Norinyl to that idea!
As an over-empowered Millennial, I’m glad to be celebrating this important anniversary, but I’m also amused by the sense of gravitas imbuing these events. Today’s young women are literally offered up a smorgasboard of hormonal contraceptive options – pills, rings, patches, the morning after pill, instead of OR in addition to good old barrier methods. There’s so much choice and variety! Consequently, we take birth control for granted. We’re even being pitched pills like Yaz on the grounds that it’s BEYOND birth control. We’re so over plain vanilla; if I’m going to take a pill, I might as well get glowing skin in the bargain. Arguably, The Pill has succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. Birth control is now beside the point.
