If you know us (us being Jess and Becky), you know that, when in doubt, there is one infallible way to woo us. No, we don’t need you to take us to nice restaurants, or buy us flowers, or write us love letters. We just need you to invite us bowling.
Seriously! Read Dating & Hookup book. Check out the chapter on The Super Horny Guy Who’s Around a Lot. It’s all in there. We’ve even got the photographic evidence to prove it.
Now normally, we wouldn’t have thought that the quickest route to a bowling group-non-date would be through Match.com. We’re experienced online daters, of course (check out our WTF?! Online Dating Series for more stories and thoughts on that!). But typically, online dating seems to err more on the side of long emails, fancy cocktails and perfect little black dresses – and less on the side of beer towers, matching flannel shirts and flirty hambone-inspired high fives.
But that’s no longer the case!
On August 3rd, we got invited to party alongside some of our favorite lady love bloggers at Match.com’s exclusive “Mix Up Your Dating Life Event” at the Terrace Club in NYC. It was here where we learned that Match.com is getting into the group-non-dating game with their new Stir events.
Here’s what we found out from this awesome guy, who is in charge of planning the events – think of him as the activities director on the Love Boat.
Match.com is bridging the gap between the online and offline worlds by hosting what they call “live singles events” across the country (we call them group-non-dates, obviously). The numbers associated with their events are pretty massive, and rapidly expanding – they’ll be hosting 200 events each month by September, and this month alone, they’re throwing 189 events in more than 62 markets. What this means, for those of us who have trouble equating numbers and figures with our own love lives, is that thousands of unattached people are attending these events every week. That’s a lot of dah opportunity right there.
What got us interested in these events was their range in activity and scale – everything from big happy hours at local bars and venues to more intimate, interest-based events like cooking classes, wine and tequila tastings, dance lessons, BOWLING NIGHTS (!!!), rock climbing and more. Each Stir event is also customized through group matching algorithms in terms of age, gender and interests – so if you’re a salsa-loving 26-year-old, you probably won’t end up hanging with a never-gets-off-the-couch 55-year-old.
If you’re curious about how these events actually shake down – well, so are we! So we’ll be attending an upcoming Stir event ourselves, and then we’ll let you know how it all goes. But in the meantime, if you’d like to get out there and start group-non-dating ASAP, just join Match.com and learn about/sign up for these events at their site under the “Events” header. The Happy Hour events are free and open to both registered and subscribed Match.com members, while the interest-based events are only offered to subscribers at a fee.
So – we’ll see you at the bowling event, then?
Jess & Becky co-created Dating & Hookup and co-founded J&R Creative Media. They have been best friends since they were 12.
datingandhookup.com is a website that explores modern romance in the Millennial era – which, let’s be honest, looks nothing like we were taught to expect. We feature essays, advice and social commentary with humor, compassion and brains, and we vow never, ever to publish a piece called “The 10 Best Ways to Satisfy Your Man in Bed”. Do click to submit your work to us. We love you.
