When the show opens, we find out Ginsberg is going out on a date with a cute teacher that his dad set him up with. Even though Ginsberg is pissed that his dad did this without telling him, he agrees to go on the date. Don and Megan are going to an advertising award ceremony, while the doctor neighbor and his wife Sylvia head to DC so the doctor can give a keynote speech.
At the advertising awards, Don is still salty about Peggy and won’t go over to talk to her, but Megan goes over and chats to Peggy about the new apartment she (Peggy) might be getting. Megan is actually really adorable, because she tells Peggy that she totally deserves the apartment that she’s looking at, and she’s not being snarky or anything. She basically needs to leave Don’s sad ass.
Soon after that, Paul Newman gives a speech at the awards and during that, someone in the crowd shouts out that MLK has been killed. Peggy’s journalist boyfriend (I never remember his name because who cares) runs off so he can try to get some type of story on it. Ginsberg and his date see the news while they’re at a diner, and they cut things off a little early. Once Ginsberg goes home to his dad, he continues to watch the news. Most of the characters are watching the news because of all the riots that are happening in the wake of MLK’s death.
Pete calls Trudy once he’s home from the awards (he’s at his Bachelor Pad) and asks her is she wants him to come back to keep her company. She tells him that she’s fine and that he doesn’t need to come back that weekend either, thank god. Trudy is finally realizing that Pete isn’t worth her time. I think it’s supposed to be pretty telling for Pete that even during everything that’s going on, Trudy still won’t talk to him. That’s how shitty he is.
Surprisingly, when Pete goes to work the next day, he actually gets into a fight with Harry for the way Harry is handling MLK’s death. He calls Harry racist for the way he wants to continue doing work, and tells him he’s only concerned about making money. Not sure if this is an attempt at giving Pete morals to make him more likable, or if Pete is just reacting emotionally to everything that’s going on around him, but I guess it’s nice to see that Pete isn’t the shittiest person in the office for once. Harry is slowly becoming the worst guy at SCDP (if he isn’t already). Joan and Don also have an awkward encounter with Don’s secretary, Dawn, complete with totally awkward hug from Joan. Peggy and her secretary also share an awkward hug (although much less awkward than Joan and Dawn’s hug), and Peggy insists that she go home.
Peggy’s realtor calls her and tells her that because there is so much going on at the moment, she’ll be able to drop the price for the apartment they’re trying to win. So weird. Peggy initially feels weird about that, but then she goes along with it. (In the end, Peggy doesn’t get the apartment, and finds out her boring boyfriend doesn’t care either way.)
The guys at SCDP have a meeting with one of Roger’s friends about a potential advertising campaign, but the guy is totally tweaked out and claims he spoke to MLK’s ghost the night before? TBH, I’m not sure what the significance of this guy being in the episode was. After the meeting ends, Don goes home and finds out that he was supposed to pick up the kids from Betty. He doesn’t think that he should pick them up because of everything that’s happening in the city, but she insists, claiming Henry says everything is fine. Don goes to get them.
The next day, Megan takes the older kids to a vigil, but Bobby stays behind with Don because he fakes sick. Even though Betty grounded him, Don takes him to see Planet of the Apes. After the movie ends, once they find out it all happened on earth, Bobby says, “Jesus,” and Don seems amused. They stay to see the movie a second time and Bobby tells a man cleaning the theater that “everyone goes to movies when they’re sad.” Don and Bobby actually have a nice time at the theater, and it’s interesting to see Don caring about one of his kids for 10 seconds.
Once they get back from the movie and the kids are asleep, Megan calls Don out on his drinking and tells him that he needs to get it together and pay attention to his kids. Don finally says that he thinks he’s been faking his feelings for his kids this whole time and has his own Daddy Issues, but now that he finally had a good time with Bobby and paid attention to him for 5 minutes, he feels Real Love for them and it feels like his heart is going to explode. This part of the episode was nice, I guess, except it sucks that it took Don like, 10+ years to love his kids. And he’s still a cheating shithead. But maybe this is the growth for Don that we’re all crying for.
Pete is all alone in his apartment and gets delivery. It seems depressing. Good.
Betty looks at her dress sadly, and she seems depressed too. Everything is depressing.
Don goes into Bobby’s room to say goodnight, and tries to make him feel better about everything that’s going on. After Bobby goes to sleep, Don walks out onto the balcony and dramatically listens to the sirens in the night.
