It’s a New Year. A lot of us are saying: things are gonna be different. We’ve resolved to make it so.
But here’s a hope and wish for all of us, dear WTF?! readers. As everything changes around us – at the speed of light. No wait, faster! Amidst the swirling madness that is f*cked up modern life and love, may we stay, always, ourselves. May we become…only, and even moreso…ourselves. May we realize – and stay true to – ourselves.
So we’re going to need a whole WTF?! series on Walt Whitman (could he sound more Millennial, despite being born in 1819????). But for this first Monday of the New Year, let me offer you my favorite lines from Song of Myself.
I am proud of our generation, because I think we carry on this attitude, so wonderfully celebrated in Whitman’s paean to…himself. We strut our self-appointed stuff. But I know myself – and I know I need also to aspire to the kind of all-accepting, all-contended, all-perceiving way of being Whitman describes. So here’s to celebration, promise, realization and resolution!
I exist as I am, that is enough,
If no other in the world be aware I sit content,
And if each and all be aware, I sit content.
One world is aware, and by far the largest to me, and that is myself,
And whether I come into my own today or in ten thousand or ten million years,
I can cheerfully take it now, or with equal cheerfulness I can wait.
My foothold is tenoned and mortised in granite,
I laugh at what you call dissolution,
And I know the amplitude of time.
I am the poet of the body,
And I am the poet of the soul.
