“She doesn’t want to live off-camera, much less talk. There’s nothing to say off-camera. Why would you say something if it’s off-camera? What point is there in existing?” - Warren Beatty about Madonna, Truth or Dare, 1991
If a Millennial does something and doesn’t share it via Facebook or Twitter, then did it really happen?
The act of living your life on a public stage was once relegated to celebrities, politicians, athletes and MTV VJ’s (90′s, I miss you!). But with the dawn of the internet and, more specifically, of social media, we can all feel famous. Someone, somewhere, will inevitably be interested in our status update or Tumblr blog. And so we get addicted to the incessant call-and-response of our online networks.
But how does our constant communication via technology – text, email, BBM, Gchat, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, AIM,etc. – affect our desire to communicate within actual face-to-face relationships? Now that we are never forced to share anything with only the person sitting across from us, be them our significant others, Ego Boosters or Unavailable Guys, are we losing the ability to openly and honestly talk to each other? Are we avoiding saying the things that really matter, when simply texting it to a friend can seem so much easier?
Are we oversharing in our online lives and undersharing in our real lives?
In the latest installment from my Huffington Post column, I ask this question and share some insights from my recent interviews on the WTF?! tour. Leave your thoughts in the HuffPost comments section – if your’e going to overshare, then you should definitely do it there!
