Though it happened a while ago (especially in celeb gossip time) every single mention of Jones since includes a line or two about how she has a baby and hasn’t revealed the name of the father. As though that’s her identity now: Single Mom With A Mysterious Baby. Or worse, Slut.
Back when she gave birth, some of the comments on blog posts regarding the unnamed father, were ruthless. Many commented snarkily, “She doesn’t even know.” Yeah, because if a woman has a kid and decides to raise the baby on her own, and doesn’t reveal the name of the father, it must be because she’s a slut who slept with so many men that she couldn’t keep track of which one impregnated her.
Thank God for this one person who spoke up and said, “Single girls are allowed to date. so she decided to have the baby and not have an abortion, she’s not required to reveal the baby daddy. innocent speculation a+ but the slut shaming is unbelievable.” It’s like people were transported back to the Mad Men era in regards to their attitudes about her decisions.
Her costar Elizabeth Moss said at the time of the whole “baby daddy” situation, “I think you can allow people to know as much as you want them to know. And I’ve seen many people do it very successfully. … Some people don’t mind and some people mind.” Why would anyone mind, I thought?
And people totally did! They almost felt like she owed them, as though they had a right to know. Maybe because it’s just so rare in Hollywood for an actress to have a baby, not sell her story or her photos for a magazine cover, and on top of all of that, to be a single mom. Perhaps people just expect to hear all the details. They want the details so they can gossip and if they don’t get the details, they gossip anyway. (ABC News — ABC NEWS — posted an article titled “Top 5 Prime Suspects for January Jones’ Baby Daddy.”)
Is it because people just don’t like her? Is it because they think she’s untalented, cold, and slept her way into an acting career? (I like her, I don’t have a problem with her.)
So what do you think? To quote the poster above, where does it go from “innocent speculation to slut shaming”? And why do people have such a problem with this?
