Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, likely forever known as Mulder and Scully, were and still are rumored to be dating. I NEED this to be true. I NEED Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny To Be Together.
Why, right? That sounds insane. The X-Files television show ended eleven years ago and the 2 X-Files films were in and out of theaters faster than it takes to smoke a cigarette.
Admittedly, I wasn’t even a huge fan of The X-Files. I watched season 3 or 4 — can’t remember — while it was on, but switched over to Sex and the City, as they were on the same time and same night, in an era before DVRs where one had to make a very thoughtful choice.
The show lost me. I saw the first film because my mom happened to be watching it. I tried to back get into the show a few months ago, but thought it just dragged. I hear it improves after the first season though.
So why do I even care? Because…I want to believe.
No but really, obvious X-Files reference aside, I really do want to believe. Their chemistry on that show was too good to be confined to a fictional life. We all saw it happening. And we all wanted it to happen, the same way we hoped against all hope that Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet would become Jack and Rose in real life and I’m STILL hoping for that.
It’s different from say, wanting Jerry Seinfeld and Julia Louis-Dreyfus to get together in real life. This is one particular couple that…oh God, I can’t even believe I’m typing this…makes you believe in a sort of modern day fairy tale. The idea of fiction becoming reality. We don’t know them as real people. We know them as actors playing characters. We don’t know what their lives are like. But we know that they would be so good together, even though we don’t actually know that. It’s like when you meet someone and it feels so obvious that you’re going to wind up together, that you can see it, and they can see it, and so can everyone else.
Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser did a couple of Mad Men episodes together and now they’re engaged. It can, and does, happen. (Does it last? That’s a different tale.)
I don’t care if it’s pathetic. It just makes me so freakin’ happy. In a strange way, it gives me hope for my own life. That no matter how things seem now, you never know what could happen. That maybe things have a way of working out. The truth is out there.
