How do you send a clear message to your potential paramour in the post-dating world? Shoot him a text? Start a BBM convo? Have your friend tweet his friend?
Now there’s a new option! And it’s a lot more direct than you might expect. Here’s a way to get yourdecidedly modern point across in a classic, old-school way – send a greeting card! (thanks to Alison for finding these <3)
No, not an e-card (not even one of the awesome ones from Someecards). A real, live, paper-and-pen greeting card. It may seem old-fashioned at first. But when you see the messages on these cards, it becomes immediately apparent that they were created to push the limits and miscommunications of the modern romantic universe:
Wishing that he would touch base more often? Say it with the “I dare you to text me now” card.
Hoping to establish a traditional, non-ambiguous connection with a guy? Send him the “I dare you to take me to dinner” card.
Can’t stop thinking about that hot guy who just moved across the country?Make use of the “I dare you to have phone sex with me” card.
These cards are appealing not only because they’re cute and creative, but because unlike so many of the tools that men and women use to interact these days, they actually make communication MORE clear, instead of less. They allow you to say exactly what you want, to the person who you want it from, in a humorous way that evokes the clear-cut methods and expectations of a bygone era (read: letter writing). These cards cut silly miscommunications out of the conversation – no one receiving the “I dare you to have phone sex with me”card is going to sit there wondering if you’re into them…and they’re also not going to freak out and convince themselves that you’re rushing down the marriage track. You want dinner, you get dinner. You want a text, you get a text. You want phone sex…you get the picture. Viva la direct communication!
I’d love to see this line of greeting cards continue and expand. Who wouldn’t want to send cards with taglines such as, “I dare you to meet up with me without inviting seven other people,” “I dare you to admit that we’re more than friends,” or “I dare you to finally try to hook up with me tonight.” There could be “I dare you to…” cards for every ambiguous situation out there!
Open and honest communication without some of the awkwardness? With a funky artistic touch? Bring it on!
