Cadillacs. Elvis. Meatloaf. Could you live like it was the 1950s? What if it was to save your marriage?
That’s what one couple is doing. Gary and Mandy Jones from Tamworth, Staffordshire, claim that living like a 1950s husband and housewife is the key to a happy marriage. Mandy told the Daily Mail, “It may seem strange and we get the odd nasty comment, but this way of life works for us and has saved our marriage. We love everything about the 1950s, from the clothes to the way of life. Since we started living like this I’ve been a better wife and Gary and I are closer than ever. We should all take advice from our grandparents and start living the Fifties way.”
So how do they live like it’s the ’50s? They’ve pretty much changed their lifestyle, from their clothing, to their home decor; their car, to their schedule — Mandy has dinner on the table every night ready for her husband. They’ve always been into the rockabilly lifestyle but she says it was their daily “bickering” that led them to change their lives so dramatically:
“Gary and I were sick of the same routine and we were bickering on a daily basis. We spent our weekends drinking at the pub until the early hours and it just got so boring.” Their weekends now include going to vintage fairs and listening to records on their jukebox.
They have nothing to base their successful marriage on other than their anecdotes: “1950s marriages definitely work better than marriages these days. The divorce rate is so high at the moment and it never used to be in the past.” According to the Daily Mail, the divorce rate in 1950 was 26%.
I don’t quite see though, the correlation in living a 1950s lifestyle and having a happy marriage. I think what works for this couple is that they’ve both found a hobby they love and participate in, and this mutual love gives them something to look forward to and to pursue with passion, hence, less “bickering.” I think any couple committed to living any kind of specialized lifestyle would have a happy marriage for this reason.
What do you think? Would you ever adopt this lifestyle?
