Warning: this is likely more than you’ve ever wanted to read about Amanda Bynes in your entire life.
Amanda Bynes has people talking, tweeting, and blogging, and not for her work. No. It’s for her erratic behavior. In case you’ve been living under a rock — and it must be an awesome, soundproof, really comfortable rock — Bynes started acting strange in the summer of 2012. This is when her good, wholesome, goofy, funny and sweet girl persona took a Lohan turn: a hit and run, photographs of her smoking pot in her car, and driving on a suspended license (a settlement for the hit and run was reached, and charges were dropped).
Then came the gossip that she was mentally unstable. While shopping in LA, people said that Bynes locked herself in a dressing room for hours. Bynes moved to New York City to live on her own. Stories came out that the entire hallway of her floor reeked of pot; that she left her apartment door wide open all day; that she would out of nowhere start laughing to herself. She would go to the gym in fishnet tights and wearing a wig. That on more than one occasion, she would break down into tears while at a workout class and would have to be escorted out.
Then the tweeting started. Bynes tweeted everything from how she wanted rapper Drake to “murder her vagina” to tweeting topless photos of herself. She revealed her new look of cheek piercings, ever changing dyed hair, and Nicki Minaj-esque makeup. Bynes began to deny all rumors of her erratic behavior. She revealed she has an eating disorder and that she got her nose done. She called out every blog and gossip magazine that published false rumors. She lashed out a them for using photos of her that she didn’t like, insisting that people only use photos she published on her twitter account. If anyone disagreed with her, she called them “ugly.” She insist that she isn’t mentally ill, that she’s working on a clothing line, and that everything said about her is exaggerated. But the rumors keep coming and people keep saying that she’s in denial; that she needs help.
The latest Bynes news (from Radaronline) is that her apartment is mostly empty and “filthy”, the windows are spray painted black, she’s high all the time on marijuana and sometimes cocaine, and her feet are covered in cuts and bruises. This is the report from two photographers Bynes invited into her home who sold photos they took of Bynes in her apartment to In Touch Magazine. She’s lashed out in an extended tweet, saying, “those aren’t my toes! My toes are pedicured!” and “they bought fake altered photos by obviously that ugly black man” and “they morphed photos of my face onto someone’s body to ruin my life!” Don’t worry if none of this makes sense to you. It’s baffling to everyone. Bynes goes on to say that she’s going to sue.
What I love about Bynes stories is that they’re not necessarily mind blowingly shocking; they’re little bits of weird stuff that add up to an overall, what the hell? They’re odd events, like the previously mentioned gym incidents and how a neighbor witness Bynes getting off the elevator into the lobby, laughing to herself, then getting back in the elevator. The stories are never something like, Amanda Bynes passed out on a bad batch of cocaine in a nightclub bathroom and was rushed to the ER. It’s, Amanda Bynes wore fishnets to the gym, her wig fell off, and she cried in the bathroom. Aside from the fishnets and wig part, I can very much relate to laughing to oneself and crying in bathrooms.
I still haven’t decided what is going on with her. I really think sometimes she’s screwing with us, but then she does stupid things like calling people ugly, posting bizarre photos of herself in her bathroom mirror, and referring to someone as a lying “ugly black man”. None of these things will help her image of a put-together young woman who is starting a new business.
Many people say that she is bipolar. It’s entirely possible that she lies somewhere on the bipolar spectrum but I’m getting frustrated with everyone being branded as bipolar, as though the word bipolar is just a synonym for “cranky” or “irresponsible”. Speculation is fine; branding someone bipolar to insult them is not. People are very quick to point and shout “bipolar” or “schizophrenia”, disorders that are already so stigmatized that using it as a go-to label or insult damages those actually dealing with these serious illnesses. Instead of those rushing to insult her or defend her with a diagnosis of an illness she says she does not have, maybe we should consider that Amanda Bynes is just irresponsible, didn’t have a real childhood growing up, didn’t get to let loose in college, is living on her own, has too much money, and has no idea what the hell she’s doing.
I know that no one needs an essay on Amanda Bynes, and I didn’t sit down and intend to write one. Ultimately, Amanda Bynes is a grown woman, and she is allowed to tweet to her heart’s content. She’s putting herself out there and she doesn’t always like what she gets in return, but these are consequences of making your own decisions. If one day Bynes decides to talk about what’s going on in her life, or reveal that she does suffer from some form of depression, that’s up to her. I’m going to let her lead the way and I’ll follow.
